Volunteer
Opportunities with the Baltimore County Public Schools
Thank you for
considering volunteering. Volunteers help the professional staff sustain an
effective learning environment, enrich the experiences of students, build
understanding of the mission, and create good will among community
shareholders.
Volunteers are
non-paid individuals recruited and placed by schools and offices to perform
tasks that support the school system's mission. Although volunteers are not
paid staff, they are expected to follow BCPS policies, rules and procedures.
Getting
Started
Before volunteering
in any BCPS school or office, each volunteer candidate must:
- Complete
the BCPS volunteer screening process which includes submitting a signed BCPS
Application for Volunteer Services. Volunteer screening helps ensure that
students and staff work in safe environments and helps the school system
identify individuals who may pose a risk to students, to staff, or to the
school system. BCPS does not discriminate on the basis of race, gender
religion, sexual orientation, age, ethnic origin, or disability in its
recruitment, screening, and placement of volunteers.
- Read
the BCPS Volunteer Handbook and attend training. Training will be offered at
each school site. Information covered in training will include an
orientation specific to the school site, role and conduct of volunteers in
the schools', school and student safety and security; laws, policies and
rules related to volunteering. Additional training related to the task the
volunteer will be performing may occur at any time.
- Sign a BCPS Volunteer Training Certificate. This document stays on file with
the school or office where the volunteer is serving.
- Be matched
with a suitable task by the school volunteer coordinator and/or appropriate
administrator. Volunteers will be placed according to the job to be done,
the needs of the program, and the qualifications required for effective job
performance.
